First Day Hike at Minnewaska State Park Preserve – Mossy Glen – Approximately 3.5 mile snowshoe outing. Limited number of snowshoes available to borrow from the education department, located at Peter’s Kill area (5080 Route 44/55, Gardiner), arrive early. If there is insufficient snow cover, it will be a hike. Call to preregister. 1 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Meet at Awosting Parking Area, 5281 Route 44/55, Kerhonkson; 1pm-4:30pm; 845-255-0752;

First Day Hike at Minnewaska State Park Preserve – Sam’s Point – This will be an approximately three-mile trek through the scenic park. Snowshoe rentals may be reserved for $5 per person for this program, arrive early. If there is insufficient snow cover, it will be a hike. First Saturday Art Gallery Receptions – 5:00pm-8:00pm. Arts Society of Kingston (ASK) 97 Broadway, Kingston, phone (845) 338-0331, www.AskforArts. Vibrant First Saturday gallery receptions offer a glimpse of what this creative city has to offer. Events throughout the year include live music, open studio tours, theatrical performances, historical reenactments, arts & cultural activities and so much more.

Friends of Historic Saugerties – 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Saugerties Public Library, 91 Washington Ave, Saugerties. The Friends of Historic Saugerties is a community group whose mission it is to make local history accessible to the community through educational initiatives including shared inquiry, exploration of resources, and programs for learning and discovery. Meetings are held every first Saturday of the month from
2:00-4:30pm in the Community Room. Everyone is welcome.

13th Annual All-Day Winter Bird Count – Record the winter bird community inhabiting the 160-acre preserve to help provide future guidance for land management/stewardship decisions. Esopus Bend Nature Preserve, 4 Shady Lane, Saugerties; Meet at the Shady Lane entrance parking lot at 5:30am for pre-dawn owling or at 7am for the diurnal part of the survey; Please contact Steve Chorvas or 845-246-5900 to register, or for additional information, no later than noon, Friday, January 5th.
